Background
The Divide sentence item type is a perfect fit for exercises aiming to evaluate the candidates'/students' comprehension of several grammar topics.
Procedure
Proceed as follows to create a Divide sentence:
- Right click the folder in which you want the Divide sentence to appear.
- Select New item.
Result: The screen Make new item appears. - Select the item type Divide sentence.
- Give it a name.
- Click OK.
- Open the tab Properties to add or change the metadata of this item.
- Open the tab Content and click on the text icon to add a text field or the asset icon to add an image, sound or video , … .
- Enter the sentence in the text field below the Split buttons.
- Insert dividers.
- Click Split on blanks to automatically insert split positions between all words in the sentence.
- Click Split manually to manually insert dividers.
- Double-click the dividers that are at the correct positions.
- Click Save.
Editing a Divide sentence item
To insert a divider at the end of the sentence, proceed as follows:
- Click Split manually.
- Click in the last text field behind the text.
Result: An extra split position and text field are inserted. Empty text fields are not shown to the user. - Double-click the last divider.
To insert a second sentence, proceed as follows:
- Click Add a new line.
- Enter the sentence in the new text field.
- Repeat steps 7 and 8 from the first procedure above.
Suppose you want to change the sentence:
"I gave the keys of the house to the babysitter." into "I gave the keys of the house to the new babysitter."
proceed as follows:
- Click in the text field "babysitter" and add "new".
- Click Split manually
- Click between "new" and "babysitter" to insert a split position between the two words.
- Click Split manually again to deactivate.
Suppose you want to change the sentence:
"I gave the keys of the house to the babysitter." into "After checking her references, I gave the keys of the house to the babysitter."
proceed as follows:
- Click Split manually and click in the first text field before "I".
Result: An extra text field is added before "I". - Click Split manually again to deactivate.
- Click in the text field and enter the text.
- Click in the first text field.
- Click Split on blanks to automatically insert split positions between the words in the first text field.
- Double-click on the divider after "references" to mark the correct position.
