Background
In the assessmentQ Themes module, you can define the branding of your assessmentQ environment by means of one or more themes.
A theme consists of 3 view modes:

- a light mode (default)
- a dark mode
- a high contrast mode

The participant will be able to select the view mode (light, dark or high contrast) via the Preferences menu item in the portal and player.
Note: For the dark and high contrast mode to be available to the participants, you need to activate the view modes for your assessmentQ environment. Once activated, they will be available for all participants and all assignments.
As an administrator you can:
- define the logos, background images, and colours that must be used in a theme.
- set the default theme for your assessmentQ environment.
The default theme is used on the sign in page, the portal, the self-registration page, the access code page and in the assessmentQ e-mails. - add extra themes that authors can use in their assignments.
If no extra themes are available, the default theme is used in assignments.
Adding a theme
Proceed as follows to add a theme:
- Go to Settings > Themes.
Result: The Themes overview is shown. - Click the Add button at the top right.
Result: The theme settings are shown. - Change the settings for your theme:
- In the General tab:
- Upload your logo for light and dark backgrounds.
- If you want to use a background image and/or a banner image, upload the images and select the Show option.
- If you want to replace the default system image for the schedules, upload the image of your choice.
Note: The new default schedule image will be used on the portal in all schedules for which the scheduler did not add a schedule-specific image.
- In the Light tab, define the default colours and headers settings.
- In the Dark tab, define the colours and headers settings for the Dark mode.
- In the High contrast tab, select the logo to be used in the High contrast mode.
Note: You cannot change the colours for the high contrast mode. The colours comply out of the box with level AAA, the highest level of the WCAG 2.1 guidelines.

Customising a theme
To customise an existing theme, proceed as follows:
- Go to Settings > Themes.
Result: The Themes overview is shown. - Click on the theme you want to customise in the Themes overview.
Result: an overview of the theme is shown. - Click on the Edit button at the top right.
Result: the themes settings are shown. - Customise the settings for your theme. The different tabs are explained in the article Adding a theme.
- Click on the Save button at the top right.
Result: The updated settings are applied.
Warning: Take into account that when you update an existing theme, its changes are applied immediately, also in the assessmentQ player for ongoing assignments. Therefore, it is recommended to update a theme only when your participants are not in the middle of an exercise or exam.
Changing the default theme
Proceed as follows to change the default theme for your assessmentQ environment:
- Go to Settings > Themes.
Result: The themes overview is displayed. - Click on the three dots next to the name of the theme you want to set as the default theme.
- Click on Set as default template.
Result: The theme will become the new default theme. This is indicated in the top right corner of the theme:
Note: The author can still select a theme other than the default theme for a specific assignment in the Behaviour tab of an assignment. The default theme, however, is always applied to the sign in page, registration page, portal and access code page. It is only in the player that another theme can be used.
Replacing the default portal image
A default schedule image is used on the portal in all schedules for which the schedulers did not add a schedule-specific image.
As an administrator, you can replace the default schedule image that is provided in assessmentQ by a default image of your choice. You can, for example, use the logo of your organization or company.
Note: The default schedule image is only shown in the portal schedules in case the schedulers did not add a schedule-specific image to their schedules. As soon as schedulers upload an image to their schedules, the schedule-specific images are shown on the portal.
Procedure
Proceed as follows to replace the default schedule image:
- Go to Settings > Themes..
Result: The Themes overview is shown. - Open the default theme of your assessmentQ environment.
Result: The theme overview is shown. - Click on the Edit button at the top right.
Result: The theme settings are shown. - In the General tab, upload a new schedule image at the bottom of the page.
Note: Large images are automatically cropped and resized to 250 x 150 pixels after upload.
- Click on the Save button at the top right.
Result: The new default schedule image will be shown in the participant's portal in all schedules for which the scheduler did not add a schedule-specific image.
Choosing a portal image
When you upload a portal image in the theme of your assessmentQ environment:
- Check the preview at the left-hand side to verify that the part that will be used on the portal meets your expectations.
- Pictures of a person are to be avoided, unless there is enough space around these persons.
- Landscape photos or photos of buildings from a distance work best.
- Smaller photos will be enlarged, and will appear in poor quality.
- Large photos are reduced to the minimum size so that the file size remains optimal.
