Background
A journal entry is a record of transactions done by an organisation. A journal entry can consist of several records, each of which is either a debit or a credit. The total of the debits must equal the total of the credits, or the journal entry is considered unbalanced.
With this item type:
- participants can learn how to book a transaction in a journal.
- teachers can test if a participant can correctly book a journal entry.
Tip: As there are multiple ways to fill in a journal, Journal is also available in the Grading module allowing graders to override the automatic score if they want.

- Go to the folder in which you want to add an item.
- Click on to add an item.

Journal scoring options
- Score per item: Define the maximum and minimum score for the item. All gaps need to be correct to get the maximum score.
- Score per gap: A score is given for every correct gap.
- Score per row: A score is given for every correct line.
- For both Score per gap or Score per row additional options are available:
- Select Debit and credit must be equal, if you want the score to be zero if the debit total and the credit total are not equal (even if several gaps are correctly filled in).
- Select Allow additional lines if you want to allow the participant to split the journal entries over more lines. If selected, lines with the same account number will be added together to calculate the score per gap. If deselected, the score will be zero as soon as a journal entry is split over more than one line.
- Select Recalculate if you want to recalculate the minimum and maximum score of the item.
Item-specific options
Click in the interaction block to see the item-specific options for this block:
Group debit/credit:
- If selected, Debit and Credit lines are grouped.
- If deselected, Debit and Credit lines are shown in a flat list.
- This option is enabled by default .
Allow account range:
- If selected, the author can enter a range of account numbers. If the participant enters an account number within that range, the answer will be evaluated as correct.
- If deselected, the author cannot enter a range of account numbers.
- This option is disabled by default.
Show ALLP column:
- ALLP stands for Assets-Liabilities-Loss-Profit.
- If selected:
- a dropdown appears next to the account name where the author can select A, L, L or P.
- the author can choose to take the selected ALLP value into account in the scoring. When enabled, the item or row is correct when the participant selects the correct value(s). When disabled, the evaluation doesn't take into account this value. This applies to all scoring mechanisms.
- If deselected, the dropdown is not shown.
- This option is disabled by default.
Show +/- column:
- If selected:
- a dropdown appears next to the account name where the author can select + or -.
- the author can choose to take the selected value into account in the scoring. When enabled, the item or row is correct when the participant selects the correct value(s). When disabled, the evaluation doesn't take into account this value. This applies to all scoring mechanisms.
- If deselected, the dropdown is not shown.
- This option is disabled by default.
Use a dot as thousands separator:
- If selected, a dot will automatically be seen as a separator for thousands and comma will be seen as a separator for decimals. For example: 100.000,00.
- If deselected, a space is used as separator for thousands and comma is seen as separator for decimals. When the participant enters a dot, it will automatically be replaced by a comma. For example: “100.000,00” becomes “100,00”.
- This option is disabled by default.
Allow extra journal entries in the player:
- If selected, the participant will see an Add button in the player allowing him to add additional journal entries.
- If deselected, the Add button will not be shown. This way, you can force participants to only use one journal entry.
Note:The journal entries that added by the author in the backoffice are shown in the Solution of the item. It is not mandatory for a participant to have the same number of journal entries as shown in the solution. For the evaluation of the item, the values for identical account numbers are added up, so a participant can have a correct result with one or more journal entries provided the total values per account number are the same as in the solution.
Adding a date and document to a journal entry
Open the Journal entry tab to add a date and / or document (text only) to a journal entry.
Note that this information is optional: a journal item can be perfectly valid without date and / or document.
When your journal item contains multiple journal entries, you can switch between the different journal entries using the arrows at the bottom.
Result: The date and/or document are shown to the participant in the player. This information is read-only; the participant cannot edit these fields.
