About LTI 1.3
LTI stands for Learning Tools Interoperability and is a standard from IMS Global in order to integrate more easily with, for example, Learning Management Systems (LMS). It provides a mechanism for authorizing users to access one web-based application from another web-based application.
The core LTI version 1.3 and a package of high-value services align LTI with industry-best security and provides a clear path forward for existing services and new services to pursue the rich integration available between learning platforms and tools.
In LTI 1.3:
- Introduction of the IMS Security Framework specification prescribing improved security based on OAuth2 and JSON Web Tokens
- Improved documentation and migration guidance to help move the market from the benefits of basic launch to the full suite of LTI possibilities
- Alignment with the LTI Advantage set of services that enable a fully integrated and innovative digital ecosystem
LTI ADVANTAGE is a package of three essential end-user services that build on LTI 1.3. Together, these standards implement features that support key teaching and learning activities, such as the provisioning of user names and roles so a tool can intelligently address the learner on launch, and the exchange of assignments from a platform to an assessment tool and the subsequent scores back to a central gradebook. Setting up an LTI 1.3 integration
As an administrator, you can set up an LTI 1.3 integration between assessmentQ and your LMS. Setting up an LTI integration is done in the Integrations module.
There are 2 ways to set up an LTI integration between assessmentQ and your LMS:
- Dynamic registration
This is an easy and automated way to link both platforms. You only need to copy-paste one URL from your assessmentQ environment into your LMS and the LTI configuration is set up automatically. Note that this only works if your LMS supports dynamic registration. - Manual configuration
If your LMS does not support Dynamic registration, you need to configure the LTI integration manually. In this case, you will have to copy-paste several URLs from
assessmentQ into your LMS and then from your LMS back to assessmentQ.
Notes:
- If you are interested in an LTI integration with assessmentQ and you don't have access yet to the LTI Integration module, please contact Televic Education via https://support.televic-education.com.
- You can only add one LTI integration to your assessmentQ environment.
Via Dynamic registration
Proceed as follows to set up a dynamic registration:
- In the Settings module, open the Integrations submodule and click LTI 1.3.
- Select Dynamic registration.
Result: The Dynamic registration popup is shown. - Copy and paste the dynamic registration URL to your LMS and click Done.
Note: The URL is specific to your assessmentQ environment.
Via Manual configuration
Proceed as follows to manually set up an LTI configuration:
- In the Settings module, open the Integrations submodule and click LTI 1.3.
- Select Manual configuration.
Result: The Configure LTI 1.3 popup is shown. - Copy-paste the URLs in the left pane to your LMS.
- Copy-paste the returned values from your LMS into the right configuration pane in assessmentQ. For more information, please consult the LTI documentation of your LMS.
- Click Save.
Result: The LTI configuration is done. You can now add assessmentQ assignments to your LMS.
Adding an assessmentQ assignment to your platform
There are 2 ways to add an assessmentQ assignment to your LMS:
- Via Deep Linking
The Deep Linking service allows you to easily integrate an assessmentQ assignment in your LMS. You can search and select an assignment from a list directly from your LMS. You can also add multiple assignments at once. For more information, please consult the documentation of your LMS. - Via copy-pasting the LTI 1.3 URL of the assignment
You can find the LTI 1.3 URL in the details of your assignment, see Using an LTI link to an assignment.
Synchronisation of roles
Users who start an assignment from your LMS are automatically registered and logged on to assessmentQ.
-
- When a user has a teacher role (or something equivalent) in your LMS, LTI will inform assessmentQ that this user has the role Instructor. If this role does not exist yet in assessmentQ, it will be created. An Instructor role in assessmentQ will only get access to the Assignments module.
- When a user has an administrator role (or something equivalent) in your LMS, LTI will inform
assessmentQ that this user has the role Administrator and create this role if it does not exist yet.
Notes:
- The roles are defined in the LTI standard.
- In case you define custom roles, these roles will also be created in assessmentQ.
Grades
In the LTI schedule you define when the results are pushed back to the LMS.
- Immediately when the participant finishes the assignment:
When a user pushes the Finish button in the assessmentQ player, the session will be finished and the obtained result will be sent back to your LMS immediately. - At a specific time:
When there are items in the assignment that still require manual grading or if you only want to publish the results later on, you can define in your LTI schedule when to publish your results. - Never:
The results will not be shown in the LMS.
Note:
If your LMS system doesn't accept sending results to the platform, please contact Televic Education via https://support.televic-education.com.
