Background
There are two types of drag and drop on background items in assessmentQ:
- Drag and drop text on background
- Drag and drop image on background
The drag and drop on background items require participants to drag a piece of text or an image and drop it on one or more correct dropzones on a background image.
These item types are typically used when students need to put information in the right order or place.
Examples
Drag and drop text on background
Drag and drop image on background
Procedure
Proceed as follows to create/edit a Drag and drop text on background or a Drag and drop image on background item:
- Go to Authoring > Items.
- Go to the folder in which you want to add your item.
- Click on to add an item.
- Select the item type Drag and drop text on background or Drag and drop image on background as desired.
Result: The content pane of the item is opened. - Enter the item name in the breadcrumb at the top.
- Click in the content block and fill in the instruction.
- Click + Add block if you want to add additional content blocks.
- Click in the interaction block and add your background image.
Tips:
- You can resize the background image by dragging the corner or by setting an image size for the background image in the Block tab. The image ratio, however, cannot be changed.
- Large background images are automatically resized to 750 pixels wide after upload.
- You can replace the background image at any time.
- Add a dropzone:
- Click +Dropzone.
Result: A dropzone is added in the middle of your background image. On the right of the screen, you see that the Dropzone tab is opened. - Move the dropzone to the correct position and resize to the desired size.
- If you want to add a line from the dropzone to a specific position on the background image, see below.
- If you want to define an active zone around your dropzone, see below.
- Click +Dropzone.
- Add one or more answers to a dropzone:
- Click on the dropzone to which you want to add one or more answers.
Result: On the right of the screen, you see that the Dropzone tab is opened. - If you are working on a Drag and drop text on background, enter the answer(s) in the Answers section.
- If you are working on a Drag and drop image on background item, upload one or more images in the Answers section.
Tip: If you click on an image in the Answers section, you can resize the image by dragging the corner or by setting an image size. You can also replace the image.
- Define whether the answers are correct or incorrect. For more info, see Answer-specific options in Drag and drop in text.
- Click on the dropzone to which you want to add one or more answers.
- Repeat steps 8 to 9 until you have added all the dropzones you need.
Tip: You can duplicate a dropzone to work faster. A duplicated dropzone has the same size and the same content as the original dropzone, including the answers, hints, and advanced options. The active zone and the lines, however, are not duplicated.
- Click Preview to try out your item.
Adding lines to dropzones
To avoid overlapping dropzones or to position the dropzones in a more convenient way on the background image, it is possible to add lines between a dropzone and a specific position on the background image.
To add a line to a dropzone, proceed as follows:
- Open your item and click on the dropzone of your choice.
Result: The Dropzone tab is opened. - Click the Line button next to the Dropzone button at the bottom of the interaction block.
Notes:
- Adding lines to dropzones is only possible if the option Show dropzones is activated. If the Line button is not activated, you will first have to enable Show dropzones in the Block tab. More info.
- You can also define the line end point style (square, circle, arrow, line) in the Block tab.
- You can add a maximum of one line per dropzone.
- Move the line endpoint to the required position on the background image.
Defining an active zone for a dropzone
You can define an active zone around the dropzone. That way, you can enlarge the dropzone where the participant has to drop the draggable such that the participant does not have to place the draggable exactly on the (invisible) dropzone.
To add an active zone to a dropzone, proceed as follows:
- Open your item and click on the dropzone of your choice.
Result: The Dropzone tab is opened. - Click the Active zone button next to the Dropzone button at the bottom of the interaction block.
Note: Adding an active zone to a dropzone is only possible if the option Show dropzones is switched off. If the Active zone button is not activated, you will first have to switch off Show dropzones in the Block tab. More info.
- Create the active zone around your dropzone by clicking several times on the background image and click Save or press enter to close the active zone.
Item-specific options
You find the item-specific options in the Block tab:
Shuffling draggables
By default, this option is switched on:
all participants will see the draggables (i.e. the images or text they need to drag to the correct dropzones) in a different order each time a session is started or resumed.
When you de-activate this option, all participants will see the draggables in the same alphabetical order.
Allowing to re-use draggables
By default, this option is switched off:
as soon as a participant drags and drops a draggable on the background, it is no longer available as draggable from the list on top.
When you activate this option, the participant can infinitely take the draggable from the list on top.
Showing dropzones
By default, this option is switched on:
- The dropzones on the background image are shown to the participant.
- When the dropzones are shown to the participants, you cannot define active zones for the dropzones.
When you deactivate this option, the dropzone will not be shown to the participant in the player. This way, you can make the exercise more difficult since the participant has no indication of the position to which the draggable should be dragged.
When the dropzones are not shown to the participants, you can define active zones for your dropzones and/or activate the snap function, such that the participant does not have to place the draggable exactly on the (invisible) dropzone.
Overview:
Showing dropzones | Using lines | Snapping draggables | Using active zones |
Enabled | Possible | Enabled by default | Impossible |
Disabled | Impossible | Possible | Possible |
Snapping draggables to the dropzone
When this option is switched on, the draggable will automatically snap to the dropzone even when a participant drops the draggable only partially within the dropzone.
In case the dropzones are shown to the participants, the snap option is switched on by default and you cannot switch it off.
You can activate this option only if the dropzones are not shown to the participants.
