The interpreterQ Hybrid web application
The interpreterQ Hybrid web application is available at https://interpreterq.azurewebsites.net
The application can be accessed in 2 different ways: by logging in to your account or by supplying a 6-character session code. Depending on the workflow used by the organization, you will receive an account which allows you to access an online dashboard, or you will receive a session code which you can use to join an ongoing interpreterQ session.
In the login screen of the web application, the button “I have a session code” or “I have an account” allows to switch between the 2 login methods.
Joining a hybrid session by session code
When you have received a session code (with format “ABC-123”) to join a hybrid session, click the button “I have a session code” on the login screen, and fill in your name and the session code.
This will bring you to the next screen where you can test and adapt your webcam and microphone settings, prior to actually joining the session. Make sure to talk into the microphone so that the application can detect if there is any sound. Only then the “join session” button will get enabled.
Attention! It is important to use headphones when joining a remote session. Using the laptop speakers will inevitably cause unwanted feedback of the received audio into the microphone, and this will make it impossible to follow the session.
Joining a hybrid session using an account
In case the organization creates an account for you, you will receive an invitation email to confirm your email address. When you receive this email, just click the supplied link, and your online account will be activated. Be aware that the supplied link only remains valid for a limited period of time.
After a first login, you can click your name in the top right corner to modify your password to something you can easily remember. In case you have forgotten your password, you can always click the “Forgot your password?” link in the login screen to request a password reset. An email will be sent to your registered email address with a link to choose a new password.
After logging in to your account you will see a dashboard containing all upcoming sessions which you can attend :
When a session is about to start, this will be indicated in the dashboard, but you will not be able to join the session until the trainer has actually started that session using interpreterQ in the classroom :
Once the trainer has started the session you will be able to join it by clicking the join button :
This will bring you to the next screen where you can test and adapt your webcam and microphone settings, prior to actually joining the session. Make sure to talk into the microphone so that the application can detect if there is any sound. Only then the “join session” button will get enabled.
Attention! It is important to use headphones when joining a remote session. Using the laptop speakers will inevitably cause an unwanted feedback of the received audio into the microphone, and this will make it impossible to follow the session.
Participating in a hybrid session
After joining a session started by the trainer, you get a large view of the table camera used in the interpreter training classroom (if no conference camera is used, you will see the trainer webcam instead). On the right side of the screen you see a list of participants for the current session, both local participants (located in the booths of the classroom) and remote participants. The sidebar also has a “chat” tab, which you can use to send a text message to the teacher and other remote participants.
In case you want to talk to the trainer, click the “Request intercom” button. A notification will appear in the interpreterQ teacher application, and the trainer will initiate the intercom, which is a private conversation between you and the trainer.
The “Mute” button allows to mute your microphone temporarily. The “share screen” button will allow to show your screen to the participants while you are giving your speech.
After joining a session, your microphone will automatically be added to the “floor” signal. This way all (local and remote) participants can hear you, just like they can hear the trainer and other delegates around the conference table. A small “speaker” icon appears when your microphone is added to the floor:
The teacher can choose to remove your microphone from the floor at any time. You will notice that through the small “speaker” icon which will disappear in that case.
The “share screen” button will allow to show your screen to the participants while you are giving your speech.
Giving a speech, used as interpreting activity
After joining an interpreterQ session remotely, the trainer can launch an interpreting activity, in which your live speech will be the source for all interpreter students to work on. The trainer can choose to optionally record the activity, in which case not only the student interpretations but also your speech will be recorded, so that - with your permission of course - it can be reused during later interpreting exercises.
As soon a the trainer has started the interpreting activity, this will be clearly indicated on your screen: a red border appears around the screen, and a notification is shown : “your speech is being broadcasted”. At this moment all students will see and hear you, and you can give your speech.
During the speech you can choose to share your screen in case you have a Powepoint presentation or alike to show to the students. (*) When clicking the “share screen” button, you will see a popup which allows you to choose what exactly to share : an entire screen or one specific window on the screen (for instance the Powerpoint presentation only)
At the end of your speech, you can click the red “stop speech broadcast” button to request the end of the activity. Indeed, the teacher remains in control of the activity, so the click on this button will just cause a notification to appear in the intepreterQ application used by the trainer, after which he can actually end the activity when all students have finalized their interpretation. When the activity has ended your screen will return to the initial state with a green intercom button instead of the read activity notification.
(*) Important remark :
At the moment of launch of the interpreterQ Hybrid module, the “share screen” function still has a limitation: switching between webcam and screen causes the remote video stream to be temporarily interrupted. This is not an issue, unless the speech is being recorded. In that case the recording will also be interrupted, resulting in multiple chunked recording files. A solution for this issue will be worked out in an upcoming release, but for now, in case of a recorded speech, it is necessary to choose between webcam or screen sharing prior to starting the activity, and keep the choice unchanged during the speech. If no recording takes place, this limitation doesn’t apply.
